Legare Bride - Ashley Crossing Coalition: One lane for Bicycles and Pedestrians, Three lanes for vehicles.

Converting the extra 4th lane on the Legare Bridge to a barrier protected multiuse path. The path will be a great connection for the Charleston and West Ashely communities. Bringing people together on a human scale when they are not required to drive a car to get around. Our Bike to Work day this year had a good turnout. Mayor Riley pledged his support to make sure this happens.

Structural annalysis of the bridge looks good for the conversion of one lane to the multi-use path. The bridge can be able to be modified to support a protective barrier for the path and the vehicles with the drawbridge. SCDOT has officially supported the proposal as well. Roadwise is currently working on the details on how to implement the design in detail. At this time it looks like the Bee Street and Lockwood Drive intersection will be updated to help traffic flow for vehicles as well as get better access for bicycles and pedestrians

Hopefully the updated details and sketch plans will be available soon.

Battery 2 Beach: Citadel students analyizing the route

Board Member, and Professor at the Citadel, Jeff Davis is leading a great group of Citadel Students in the Engineering studies on a study of the full Battery 2 Beach route. They have looked at the proposed ideal route and some interim options for the safest way to bicycle and walk/run today, as we work on making the rest safer for all. They have looked at the existing pavement widths and lane configurations, Right of Way, and traffic volumes. They are also collecting information on costs to improve the roadways to achieve a safe route for everyone.

A College of Charleston Graduate students has completed an economic impact study of the proposed route. It looks at what this route will mean for the communities for a safe walking, running and bicycle route to be in their neighborhood, and connecting to the communities around them. When it is not required to drive your vehicle to get to the store, work, or to friends.

CHATS 2012 - 2014 funding - Pedestrian and Bicycle project funding for the next few years

We are on the CHATS funding committee (with many other community representatives) looking at the 12 projects requesting funding for the next few years. There is about $1.9 M in funding for the next couple years, which is great news. The 12 projects are all good ones, and would be great to have completed. However there is a total request between all the projects of approximately $3.4 M.

Look through the project list and let us know which projects are most important to you, and why.

Johnnie Dodds update - almost lost the bike lanes

We looked through the construction plans for the new Johnnie Dodds Boulevard project and were surprised to see that tbe bicycle lanes had been removed. So was the town of Mt Pleasant. Working with the town and the contractor we help identify how to get the bicycle lanes back into the plans. We also got some missing crosswalks and sidewalk connections put in. Plus, we are working on making sure the plans are good for today, and for the future. We do not want future barriers built into todays design. That costs more money, more time, and more hassell to do it twice. The town has been excited about these changes and worked great helping to make them happen.

Right next to this projec is the Bowman Road update. From Johnnie Dodds to Chuck Dawley will be worked on soon. The existing bridge over Shem Creek will be done as part of the Rt. 17 project. It is propsed to go from the existing 2 lane (one each way) to 6 lanes (3 each way). We have been told that with a new bridge going in, with 6 lanes of vehicle traffic, "there is no room for bicycle lanes." We do not agree. If there is no room for a bicycle lane on a brand new bridge that connects between two exisitng bicycle lanes... there is no room for a new bridge. Bowmand Road will have a No Left on to the East Frontage Road. Coming from the East Frontage Road, No Left will be allowed onto Bowman Rd. This means that anyone coming down the Frontage Road, or coming under the new Bowman Road underpass on the Nice New Bicycle Lanes will not be allowed to continue safely. All of a sudden, lanes end. Sorry no room for you, good luck. The other strange part of this lapse is that just the other side of Chuck Dawley there is a nice new multi-use path from along Watermark, that connects to Hunry Neck, that connects to Sweet Grass Basket Blvd. This is part of the master plan for the town of Mt Pleasant to connect from the Ravenel Bridge to Wando High School. Now they are thinking of putting in a brand new bridge that blocks that connection. Make sure you let them know that this is not planning for the future, this is not following the master plan, this is not what the people of this town want.
