Bicycle & Pedestrian Friendly Communities
Charleston was one of 25 communities in 2003 selected by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation for an Active Living project grant. The Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments is the lead partner in this initiative and Charleston Moves is one among several other community partners involved. The purpose of the Charleston Active Living by Design project is to identify barriers to bicycling and walking in the region and to begin to address ways to break down these barriers. In the summer of 2005 Charleston Moves worked with the BCDCOG on a special opportunities grant through Active Living by Design. This Bicycle and Pedestrian Friendly Communities Project targets the City of Charleston, Town of Summerville, and City of Goose Creek.
Over the next 22 months Charleston Moves,
the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments,
and numerous community partners will be engaged in the Bicycle
and Pedestrian Friendly Community Project. The project will
introduce community stakeholders to the initiative through
a community workshop, assist local municipalities with the
formation of Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committees,
and produce a regional bicycle map among other activities.
The project will promote additional steps for the municipalities
to take to work towards being more bicycle and pedestrian
friendly communities. The partnership will also engage in
community events and encouragement programs such as National
Bike to Work Day in May and International Bike and Walk
to School Day in October.
Elements of the project include:
- Hosting Bicycle & Pedestrian Friendly Community Workshops in 3 communities.
- Assisting in establishing Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committees in 3 communities.
- Producing a Bicycle map covering the
Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester area.
- Introducing Complete Streets to 3 communities.
- Aiding in local Bike to Work day events.
- Aiding in local Bike and Walk to School
Day events.
- Introducing a Bicycle Safety curriculum
to local school districts.
- Producing Bicycle Safety Public Service Announcements to air on local radio stations.
