Tour de Sprawl
Tour de Sprawl is an educational tour highlighting issues of sprawl as they relate to our community and impact our air and water quality, environment, health of our citizens, and quality of life.
The tour is a series of informal presentations along a 15 mile route through the Charleston area. The presentations given by national and regional authorities on issues of sprawl, urban design and sustainability will all ask the question: Which way to we grow?
The tour is designed to be taken by bicycles
and there will also be a bus option with limited availability
for those unable to ride a bike. The tour is meant to be
at a slow and relaxed pace that ANYONE can do; from the
beginner cyclists to the cycling athlete, from the young
to the young at heart.
2005 Tour de Sprawl Charleston Presenters
Future of Urban Charleston -Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr.
Mayor Riley opens the Tour de Sprawl at Brittlebank Park. Mayor Riley is known for being a visionary, believing that the key to excellent urban development is to make every detail count, and to create an atmosphere of inclusiveness, rather than exclusiveness. The Honorable Joseph P. Riley, Jr., mayor of Charleston for 30 years, feels a keen responsibility to let nothing fall through, especially in the design of public places.
Two Way Streets for Livable Cities
- Dr. Robert Russell
Hear how the two-way conversion of upper King
Street is a classic case of how limited government intervention
in reestablishing two-way traffic has resulted in one of
the most vibrant areas of town. A couple years ago the Charlotte
Observer published a Sunday travel article about Charleston
and called the intersection of King and John the center
of the hip new Charleston.
Why cities must be designed for
bikes and pedestrians rather than for cars - Dana Beach
Dana Beach is the founder and director of the Coastal
Conservation League. The CCL has worked on more than 100
projects over its 16 year life to protect rural landscapes
from sprawl, insure functional, inspiring urban and suburban
development patterns, and protect irreplaceable wildlife
habitat along the coast of South Carolina. Beach is from
Columbia and lives in Charleston with his wife and two children.
The Future of Johnnie Dodds Blvd
- Vince Graham
Vince Graham, developer and founder
of the nationally acclaimed pedestrian-oriented community
I'On in Mt.Pleasant, will discuss the future of Johnnie
Dodds Blvd including the proposed flyovers vs a multi-way
boulevard design. Mt.Pleasant currently faces the question:
Which way do we grow? In regards to the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard
redesigning.
