JOHNS ISLAND:
Working in concert with the South Carolina Coastal Conservation
League, with City of Charleston Planners and with local
residents, Charleston Moves has worked to torpedo a Charleston
County Roadwise plan to substantially widen large portions
of Maybank Highway. Along with other opponents of the Roadwise
plan, we argued for a network of roads that would disperse
traffic, allowing for short trips over local roads instead
of focusing all traffic on a single artery. Charleston Moves
held that this approach ultimately would provide more easily
for the concept of Complete Streets.
MOUNT PLEASANT:
Charleston Moves has successfully made its voice heard for
Complete Streets on two huge projects: Johnny
Dodds Boulevard and Coleman Boulevard. Working with the
East Cooper Planning Council, we argued for better provisions
for both bicyclists and pedestrians on JDB (Rte. 17), and
near final plans for this project indicate that we were
heard. Similarly, when tentative plans for a new Coleman
Boulevard design were unveiled, we argued against a discontinuous
bicycle lane, one that would have diverted bicycle traffic
from the boulevard to side streets. This is an ongoing issue.
